I recently received TDS 1 gig service in my area, and despite the router advertising a 1 gig WAN port, it doesn’t recognize the connection properly. When the ONT is directly linked to my laptop or desktop, speeds remain around 960 Mbps. However, through the router, speeds drop sharply to about 360 Mbps. This happens no matter what settings I adjust. Changing configurations, enabling QoS, Firewall, etc., doesn’t help. I’ve tried various fixes using Merlin OpenWRT firmware, but Asus hasn’t updated it in years. I expect some overhead, yet I’m not seeing close to the advertised 700 Mbps. The discrepancy between Testmy.net, Speedtest.net, and TDS reports is confusing. I’m torn—should I switch to a different router? I prefer the TP-Link AXE1600 with its dual 10Gb ports and quad-band Wi-Fi 6, but there are few reviews focusing on its internet throughput. Anyone have recommendations or insights into why my connection is so slow?

Router evaluations often overlook NAT performance and may skip features like QoS. This is why I switched to pfSense. Still, with a top-tier router, handling these aspects seems likely. However, focusing too much on future-proofing all-in-one devices might be excessive, especially since WiFi 7 is approaching. You shouldn't expect consistent Gigabit speeds over WiFi until then, but wired connections would work fine.
