Upgrade your router for improved performance and security.
Hello everyone, I’m still using a BT home hub 5 that hasn’t received a firmware update since 2018. Even though BT said it would update automatically, it hasn’t happened yet, so I’m considering replacing it. I need a VDSL/ADSL router and modem combo, and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to upgrade to. I’ve checked the Smart Hub (model 1) and the TP-LINK AC1600, but I’m new to this stuff, so your advice would be really helpful.
They likely don’t need a firmware upgrade since they rarely update. I also use DSL and rely on the router/modem provided by our house and AT&T, with another connected wirelessly for convenience. The motorola model has been unreliable, so sticking with the standard setup is best. When choosing a router, make sure it supports your DSL service and works with your provider. The AC1600 should work well. The choice of model shouldn’t matter as long as it meets your needs and supports your service.
The agreement holds even with third-party routers outside an ISP’s network—they typically don’t receive many updates. My Synology Router updates frequently, but I suspect similar systems on their NAS devices might be the reason. Also, modems and gateways obtain updates directly from the ISP. Once a vendor releases an update, the ISP checks it and sends it to customers. The problem is you only get the update if the ISP believes you need it. Additionally, some ISPs, like Charter in the US, won’t provide updates for customer equipment at all. That’s something to keep in mind.
