Hi, I just got an RTX 3070 and some friends suggested my CPU is being limited by the GPU. They recommended upgrading, so I looked into the Ryzen 7 5700X and thought it seemed strong. Now I’m wondering if I should keep my current setup or move up to something like the Ryzen 7 5800X.

You're welcome. For a mainboard from the 400 or 500 series, check the BIOS on your manufacturer's site. They might support the 5000 series CPU, but it could also depend on their updates.

Hi!, I upgraded from a 3600 to a 5800X3D and noticed big improvements in FPS games—especially for sightseeing titles. The overall performance felt smoother and the low frames dropped significantly. Would you like me to recommend it?

I own a B450 and I've already updated my BIOS to support the Ryzen 5000 CPU.

The X3d was mainly responsible for the boost. I changed from a 3600x to 5800x, but single-thread speed saw minimal gains. Sure, you now have two more cores, though most games aren't heavily constrained by six cores. The significant performance jump with the extra cache on the 5800x3D comes from the AM4 socket.

It's clear you're looking for a significant performance boost. Switching to an AM5 system would definitely reflect that upgrade. I wouldn't want you investing in the 5800x thinking it would make a big difference compared to the 3600 (and I'm actually invested in AMD).

5600X or higher won't seriously limit the 3070 unless you're using a display with less than 1080p resolution (which seems likely given your setup). When the 3070 launched, the 5600X was also new and generally seen as offering great value for performance. If you're concerned about insufficient cores or threads, the 5700X is a much more budget-friendly option.
