Hi, so i currently have an i5-10400f on an asus prime z490-p. I am wanting to upgrade to an 11400, as far as I know the motherboard doesn't support the cpu yet. My brother wants a new pc so I am going to help him out by swapping my 10400f for his 11400 with some extra cash. Hopefully by then the bios update will be out. On a side note I'm thinking I should probably wait for 12th generation though.

Consider reaching out to Asus support to confirm updates for BIOS in the 11xxx CPU lineup. Also, it might be worth looking into higher-end options like the 10600K or 10700K, which are priced around $300, with 10600K at $215, 10700K at $270, and similar deals listed on PCPartPicker.

Usually, upgrading from an 11400(F) to something above 10400F adds only minor improvements. In practice, you might notice a slight boost in performance, but it's hardly noticeable. If the upgrade is balanced, it should be acceptable. But if you need to replace your motherboard, it becomes less justified. For the 12th generation, it’s unlikely to be worthwhile. This chipset represents a completely new design with updated components and memory support. In theory, it could be costly, especially since DDR4 was significantly cheaper than DDR3 at launch. A new board will also be pricey initially. You might need to invest in a better cooler unless the manufacturer provides compatible hardware for new sockets. In the worst case, you could face unexpected problems with this new technology. It’s probably best to wait until at least another generation before making the switch.
