I own a relatively old Lenovo Y410P that has become quite sluggish in certain areas. Booting takes a long time, and programs such as Steam and Firefox open slowly, though I can play games like Skyrim without any problems once they launch. Currently, my needs are limited to basic web browsing and email, but the speed is frustrating. I've installed fresh versions of several Linux distributions, and each one has faced the same performance issues (Pop!_OS, Manjaro, Ubuntu, Zorin). I'm hoping to upgrade a few parts to resolve this before considering a new laptop. My main concern is figuring out which components need updating and what specific parts are required. The machine has a 4th-gen Intel Core i7 processor, a GeForce GT 755 graphics card, and a 6GB RAM module with DDR3L SDRAM.

Switching to an SSD would significantly boost performance, and adding 16GB of RAM would also make a difference.

It seems the system recognizes a 2.5" SATA SSD. A similar model would offer significant speed improvements compared to your existing setup: https://www.newegg.com/western-digital-b...6820250088 According to Crucial, these drives work with the following specifications: https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr3/ct10.../ct4416168 You'll need two units to achieve the full 16GB capacity.

I’d choose a Crucial MX500 SSD for its reliability and performance. They’re reasonably priced and work well in my setup. For RAM, standard DDR3 SO-DIMMs are sufficient. Since I don’t know your laptop’s current configuration, it depends on whether you need to upgrade or just add another stick.

The Y510P and Y410P both disable Intel turbo boost under certain conditions, especially when the Nvidia GPU is running. Apply ThrottleStop 9.4.6 to resolve this. In the FIVR settings, set Non Turbo Ratio to 1. You can also use ThrottleStop for overclocking the 4700MQ +200 MHz and tweak the voltage. Share many screenshots if you need guidance. My Y510P has been overclocked since its release. These adjustments plus an SSD will significantly improve performance. Discard old mechanical hard drives.

Thanks! It was really useful. Hope you don’t have to use two for two sticks now.
