your laptop matches the size of your desktop and is equally heavy, but it feels much worse.

This only complicates things further.

Sandy and Ivy mobile i7s run hot. Very hot. My GT780DXR has an extensive heatsink setup and even it's 2670QM can hit 80C when pinned. 90C if it gets a little dusty. I do not believe that ThinkPad will run a mobile i7 for very long unless it has a beefier heatsink than I'm assuming it does. And you may be stuck with Sandy Bridge as its unlikely that it even has a bios update to support Ivy Bridge CPUs. Mobile platforms are abandoned very quickly, even high end ones.

I upgraded a Celeron 900 to a Core 2 Extreme X9000. Someone sold it to me for £15, almost nothing changed except the TDP went from 35 to 45. I added good thermal paste and it handled heat well without any problems.

I understand the battery only lasts a few days while studying (about 4-5 hours).
