Upgrading an old Mac might slow it down, but it’s not necessarily worse than Mojave. Mojave works well, so the jump to Catalina isn’t a huge gamble—just a small risk.

Catalina works well on a 2012 MBP, and a 2015 model performs excellently.

I noticed on the apple forums that users with the 2015 model often experienced crashes and related problems. I wanted to find out if this was a common issue.

Can't respond to that. What's going on with you right now? Are you in Mojave?

Catalina feels quite similar to Mojave in terms of issues—mostly minor bugs with some occasional hiccups.
