I've been searching for a home server and discovered a Dell Precision 3440 priced at just $150—a great deal. I added some RAM, but the device doesn't respond. It shows two amber followed by four white flashes, which points to a RAM problem. I believed I followed the specifications closely, yet Crucial's site lists compatible options. I wanted more memory than they indicated, particularly for ECC RAM since it's intended for a server role. I can research most issues online, but I'm struggling to figure out what might be missing. Perhaps I selected the incorrect RAM, but I'm unsure what else I overlooked when checking the details. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
What I've tried: Trying multiple RAM sticks together, in pairs, and various combinations. Resetting CMOS between inserts. Updating the BIOS to the latest version. Checked BIOS settings, but Dell seems unresponsive. Placed two sticks in my daily driver and they worked. Attempted to install more RAM.

First time using Dell RAM I bought: 64GB (four 16GB) HYNIX 2666MHz PC4-2666V ECC RAM. RAM specs for the 3440 SFF:

- Max memory: 128 GB

- Supported configurations: various sizes and speeds as listed
What I expected from the specs: 64GB with 4x16GB ECC RAM at 2666MHz. My first experience installing Dell RAM was smooth.
like @kirashi said, there's probably a reason the pre-installed memory was non-ecc. that would be my guess.
The issue lies in the fact that the i5-10500 lacks ECC support while Xeons do. The key upgrade depends on which processors are compatible, meaning you might need a supported Xeon or accept non-ECC memory.
Standard buffered ECC won't function with your system even if you have a Xeon, and your i5 model doesn't offer ECC support at all. Typically, to use buffered ECC RAM you require a dedicated server platform (Xeon E5 or E7, Xeon Scalable, Epyc), rather than the desktop processors that share the same socket. A few i3s and many AM4 Ryzen chips do support unbuffered ECC, though this option is usually pricier than secondhand registered ECC memory because used server racks tend to increase supply.
