You're looking at upgrading your Intel i3 8100 with a GTX 1650 Super. Deciding between an i5 or i7 depends on your needs—balance performance and power efficiency. Consider the i5 for better value and compatibility, while the i7 offers more raw power if you need it for demanding tasks.

Which motherboard are you using? This helps figure out the best upgrades without hitting throttling limits or extra costs.

For a GTX 1650 Super, an i5 works well, while an i7 is less ideal. The main distinction lies in the number of cores and clock speed. Switching to i5 is a solid choice unless you require more power. Both i3 and i5 models come with quad cores, so moving to i5 offers only a minor improvement.

I3 8100 struggles to match my performance, and the i5 has six cores.

I’d wait a month for the 12th generation. The current model is likely to become more affordable, while the 12th should be significantly quicker. You’ll also need new RAM for it.

It makes sense to go with an older i5 quad-core processor; modern ones have six cores and are more powerful. You probably won’t need an i7 unless you’re doing heavy tasks. Most times an i5 will suffice, though you’ll still need a new motherboard for the 1200 socket or newer. RAM is also important—DDR5 might be costly at first.

I'm not sure if an i5 will suffice right now, but what about the future? The i7 might be better then.

When your motherboard is compatible, using the i7 8700 (K, KF, F, or blank) or i7 9700 will extend its lifespan.

I focus on keeping things running smoothly. Occasionally I edit photos, stream games like Minecraft and FiveM, and play Valorant GTA. But my performance drops when the CPU gets busy, especially after starting a collage.

In that scenario, because your tasks aren't heavily parallelized, an i5 should work fine. Choose the most affordable model available—8400, 8500, 8600, 9400, 9500, or 9600—and I’ll assume you’re not using a Z-series board for K models.
