Hello! You're planning to replace the CPU in your HP compaq 6005 SFF with an Athlon II B28 dual-core processor. You found it at a local shop for $5 and are checking specifications online. Your current system runs Windows 10 Pro, and you mentioned a Phenom II X6 1065T that uses 95 watts. Your motherboard supports up to 95 watts and has an AM3 socket. Based on the info you shared, it seems like the upgrade should be possible. Just double-check the compatibility details and power requirements to ensure everything fits. You're taking a great first step—keep learning!

It has a certain amount of RAM, but it doesn't include a dedicated graphics card. What budget are you considering for this purchase?

Thanks! You have 12 gigabytes of 1333MHz DDR3 RAM and a graphics card installed. You're considering a budget CPU under $50 but are open to spending more if the Phenom works well. Online prices range from around $80 up to that point.

If the maximum power rating is 95W, it should work well with a 95W CPU. You shouldn’t run into issues unless you go beyond the limit by a lot, though some boards let you exceed the TDP by about 15W. It might be worth upgrading to a better motherboard if you can afford it. You can find affordable AM4 boards for under $30 even if new, or less if you buy used (under $30). If you choose that option, I suggest switching to a Ryzen 5 1600 AF—it’s roughly four times faster than the Phantom you could get for under $60 used and around $85 new, which also comes with a cooler.

Also make sure ur psu can handle it. If u got it for $5 chances are the psu might not work at all or can’t support an upgrade.

I own another similar ssf HP with an Athlon 2 X2 B24 CPU... I replaced it with a Phenom 2 X4 B95 and it performed very well for the $15 I invested. I was worried about compatibility problems with the Phenom 2 X6, so I chose the B95 instead.

Checking for potential compatibility problems with the X6 is important. The B95 project came through well. I’ll also review AM4 boards next.

I worried the HP business model might limit CPU options. I reviewed the compatibility details on HP and found the B95 was the strongest choice, fitting well despite the B95 X6 being listed. It’s a solid processor that meets my needs. With an SSD paired, the system runs smoothly for web browsing and streaming content.

I believe the x6 could have functioned effectively.

I don’t understand much about it... I should test it first to check if it works. When I looked, the X6 was near $50,000 and the B95 was around $15,000, so I didn’t want to buy a 50k CPU that might not fit on my motherboard. If the X6 had been $15k, I would have considered trying it.
