Upgrade your CPU for better performance.
Hi everyone, I recently upgraded from an RTX 2070 to a new RTX 2070 and noticed my performance didn’t improve much. Based on the tests I ran, I think my i7-6700 might be limiting my card’s potential in newer games. Looking for a good upgrade that won’t break the bank, without swapping the motherboard, I’m considering options around the 6700 series. My RAM setup is two 8GB modules at 2133MHz. Let me know your thoughts!
I would switch to approximately 3600MHz DDR4 – that would greatly boost frame rates in any game. At least for the first step… the components are now quite budget-friendly.
The performance boost on the Intel platform could be less noticeable compared to AMD Zen(2), yet it still matters. If you're thinking about upgrading, you'd likely need to replace your RAM. Switching to Intel isn't making much sense now, especially with the 10,000-series CPUs from Intel. Replacing RAM is usually the most affordable way to start improving things.
I was thinking about beginning with RAM but remain worried my motherboard won’t utilize it properly. If the page says support up to 2400MHz, why might RAM not perform at that speed? Would it still function around 2133 or 2400 until I upgrade my card? Thanks for your assistance.
I plan to wait for Intel desktop 10000 series CPUs in Q1 2020 before choosing the best option now — the Ryzen 7 3K series. That’s my take on the current CPU market situation; they might not be as strong after all. Switching just the motherboard could also provide a performance increase (Z270 chipset).
Basically, after intel's odd pricing this round, I was thinking about the 3600/3700x. I’m focused on how long the CPU would last, which made me consider the 3900x. If intel’s prices were fairer, I might change my mind. I’m still figuring out how long 8 cores would actually be useful, or if 12 cores are really overkill for just gaming. Currently, 6C/12T CPUs aren't really useful for gaming. However, things might shift around 2020... definitely, not just maybe. With enough funds, 3900x could be a solid choice for the future.
