Upgrade your CPU and will you need a new MOBO?
I'm testing a Ryzen 5 2600x on a ROG Strix B450-F board (specific MOBO). My CPU is starting to feel a bit old, and with Black Friday/Cyber Monday approaching, I wondered if switching to a 3700x would cause problems while keeping the same motherboard. I've found conflicting information online, so I'm unsure. Right now I'm running at stock configurations and haven't really considered overclocking yet because I don't see an immediate need. Saving money is important, but I want to be realistic about potential issues. My main concerns are: - Could the BIOS cause problems during the upgrade? - Will performance improve noticeably after changing the board? - Is it safe to try overclocking on this older model? - Are there other hidden issues I should watch for? Thanks ahead! ♥
as long as bios remains current, it works fine. YES. the am4 socket fits all ryzen cpus up to 2020 (per amd). note: swapping the motherboard won’t help much; your setup is already solid. you can overclock all ryzen chips except the very budget models, and there should be no problems.
Yes, update your BIOS to match the newest CPU specifications. No, improvements will come from the CPU itself, not the motherboard. Yes, you can overclock the new CPU on an older motherboard, but results vary based on board quality. No major other problems expected. Look up your motherboard’s details and read overclocker reviews before deciding.
