Greetings all, I am looking into potential upgrades for my ryzen 3600, but I am unsure which way to go. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is apparently a good one, is there a real benefit though ? Should the mobo be changed to fully harness the new cpu abilities ? Long story short : what kind of CPU should I get, is a new mobo needed ? Thanks a bunch for your help.

What type of motherboard do you currently use? For those looking to save upfront costs, a 5600 (or possibly a 5700 if it’s slightly more affordable) would work well. If your system supports it and you aim for longevity, opt for the 5800X3D.

The 5800X3D stands out as the top AM4 gaming CPU. On 1080p it would still struggle to bottleneck a 3070Ti, but significantly better than a 3600. At 1440p it could support a more powerful GPU while remaining acceptable, and a 5700X would also work well on 1440p with the 3070Ti.

You're suggesting keeping your current graphics card and opting for a higher-end GPU like the 5800 XT3 or 5700 XT. Your setup runs smoothly on a 1080p 144Hz display, and you'd appreciate more frames during intense gameplay.

Yes, but think about getting a new monitor first. With your 1440p setup, a 144+ Hz display offers a much better upgrade compared to something like the 5800X3D.

I own two 1080/144Hz displays. Upgrading both seems necessary since my OCD wouldn’t handle two different screens. Alternatively, I could go for a larger monitor and keep the other two as backup—though it might not be ideal for a budget-conscious buyer.

Having the two as side monitors would be great, consider the tie fighter configuration if the desk space allows. 32" 1440p would do you good. The same pixel size as 24" 1080p. A 27" 1440p would trigger your OCD more cause the older monitors would have larger pixels.

Honestly, any Zen 3 part will outperform Zen 2, particularly when paired with a well-tuned PBO. X3D remains essentially X3D; you can't really adjust its settings. It's mainly useful for gaming. Its performance is slower compared to most other Zen 3 models because of its lower clock speed. For cooling, it’s quite manageable, though some users find it challenging. You should consider your own advantages and disadvantages. Also, I believe game testing typically uses standard CPUs, as I frequently switch between my 5900X and X3D, and I claim the 5900X runs faster. However, since I push high power limits, X3D consumes less energy.

I mainly focus on gaming... I occasionally try other things, but not deeply enough to affect my work on 3D printing slicing in CURA. 5800X appears to be a solid choice given its value.
