Hello, I've been researching a potential upgrade for my future system. I was considering switching platforms to accommodate the new 13k Intel lineup. Someone brought up the 5800X3D as an alternative option. The processor seems powerful, so I'm wondering if upgrading from the 3600 would be worthwhile instead of sticking with Intel. Would a new motherboard be necessary? I currently have a B550 Tomahawk with a 240mm deep AIO and an EVGA Gold 750W PSU. Do I need any additional upgrades, like a new motherboard or RAM? Since my current games run smoothly at 3200Hz thanks to help from forum members, I'm concerned about higher clock speeds. Regarding cooling, I'm not sure what the best choice would be. From a price standpoint, there aren't many used options available; most are brand new and around 510€. I might be able to sell my 3600 for 50-80€, which would make the 5800X3D around 450€. ----EDIT----- I almost forgot—my monitor is set to 21:9 at 3440x1440p resolution, and testing on YouTube showed very similar FPS compared to 12600k or slightly lower. That's likely why my question came up.

Consider upgrading your CPU for gaming when paired with a powerful GPU that can fully utilize its capabilities. You don’t have to make any changes—motherboard, cooler, power supply are all acceptable. A RAM upgrade is also suitable since the 5800X3D benefits greatly from large cache, allowing it to access memory less often at 3200MHz. At 4K resolution you likely won’t feel a difference, and it won’t matter much if your GPU is under the 3070 benchmark.

I updated the post to 3440x1440p with a 3080 RX. I still run a few games that benefit from more powerful single cores, since most don’t get much benefit from multi-core optimization—usually just 2 to 4 cores are enough.

I’ve got plenty of games that make the most of it. Thanks to sim and VR titles that really enjoy that CPU power. I also run at 3200mhz RAM and only have one 140mm radiator for cooling—no worries about that.

I'm playing just one and a half games only xD and a few that usually run at 200+ FPS on whatever CPU I have. That's why I focus only on those specific ones. That's why I checked the new 7600 Ryzen or the new 13K Intel because of their high clock speeds. But this 5800X3D seems to handle them fairly well—still not sure how it would perform with my game.

That's why I checked the new 7600 Ryzen or the new 13K Intel because of their high clock speeds. But this 5800X3D seems to handle them fairly well—still not sure how it would perform with my game.

Try to search for your specific game then on google. I know sim games benefit much from the 5800x3D because all the physics are usually on a single core, and that single core can access the whole 100mb of L3 of the 3d model. Other really good upgrade path would be to wait for intel 13th gen, and get something like 13500k or something like that, a 6 core, that is really fast, but depending on your game it might still be much slower, and the platform upgrade would cost a bit more because of the ddr5 ram needed to make intel processors fast.

I planned to hold off until the 13K milestone and aim for 13,600K or possibly 13,700K. Since I don’t own an i7, it’s just a personal bonus point for me. I’ll search for a game test using this processor, but I’m skeptical because my game isn’t very popular.

Simply leave the 5800x3d value out of your current configuration and proceed, no requirement to upgrade the board.
