I don’t recommend altering the Windows upgrade process in that way. It could cause data loss or system instability.

It's not something you need to worry about, just focus on getting started.

No need for additional steps. Launching the Start menu ensures everything appears identical in the UI.

I have an unlicensed Windows 8 version (sorry Bill) and possess a Windows 7 key. I need to upgrade to a licensed Windows 10 version.

Win 8 pro gains downgrade privileges for a 7 win, though no alternative seems available.

This suggests a potential issue where the Windows 7 installation disc indicates something is wrong, possibly related to compatibility or licensing restrictions. It highlights the need to verify if the system meets the requirements for the disc and consider alternative solutions if necessary.

Downgrade options are completely out of scope here. In simple terms, "downgrade rights" imply you can switch from Windows 8.1 to Windows 7 using the same license, but only if you own a genuine Windows 8.1 license and it’s an OEM-built machine. Generally, this feature doesn’t work for regular users. @ White points out that you can’t just change the installation without losing all your data. You’ll need to wipe everything clean and reinstall everything from scratch. Don’t forget to save any critical files before proceeding.
