Upgrade to RAM leading to system slowdowns.
Upgrade to RAM leading to system slowdowns.
So hopefully the solution is straightforward and won’t make you seem confused. I’ve already tried a few fixes by myself and want to avoid contacting Cyberpower support, since they might ask me to bring in my computer for them to check. About a month ago, I bought a PC from Cyberpower with solid specs (Ryzen 5 5500, RX 6750 XT, 8GB RAM, 600w PSU, B550 UD AC motherboard). I wanted to boost the RAM because my current 8GB wasn’t enough. I added Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB 3200MHz sticks and noticed a problem: every few seconds USB devices would freeze for about three seconds. It didn’t disconnect, so my headset’s reconnect sound kept working, but any key press stayed stuck until I released it. When I removed one stick, things stabilized. I tried swapping the sticks to test if a faulty slot or a bad stick was the cause, but everything worked as long as I kept it at 8GB. I thought maybe the issue was just the RAM count, so I bought a 2x16GB kit and it still froze. Eventually, I went online looking for advice, but someone suggested updating the BIOS. It was tricky because the prebuilt one didn’t list my board, and when I finally found Gigabyte’s name, they said it wasn’t available for prebuilt models. I located a BIOS update for the B550 UD AC on Cyberpower’s site, but after changing it, the problem remained. Another suggestion was to change the RAM voltage, which I tried by gradually increasing it to 1.4V, but nothing changed. I also experimented with enabling/disabling XMP settings, though I’m not sure how to adjust them properly. I work on this machine and don’t want to send it in for a fix, especially if I think the hardware might be faulty. I’ve confirmed the motherboard is compatible with 3200MHz and can handle up to 128GB, and using one 8GB stick works fine. Any guidance would be really helpful!
They're positioned correctly. I've experimented with various setups, such as rearranging the sticks and testing different slots. Using 1x8GB worked without problems, but 2x8GB led to ongoing stuttering. A 1x16GB configuration also caused the same issue, and changing the sticks or slots didn't improve the situation.
They are completely new components—two bought from Amazon and two from Best Buy, all of the same brand. I’ve been considering the possibility that the issue stems from the motherboard itself, especially since it only activates once the RAM hits 16GB, no matter the setup or number of sticks. This adds some uncertainty because the Gigabyte B550 UD AC is a ready-made board with Cyberpower, and it’s unlikely Best Buy would rush to replace it on the spot if I brought my warranty. Would you know if they could bring a PC in to swap the possibly faulty board for a new one immediately?
The B550 needs to reach up to 5400 MHz. If it's not performing well at 3200 MHz, it could be due to issues with the RAM slots in the motherboard or the CPU's memory controller being faulty.
