Upgrade to i9
Upgrade to i9
I have an Asus Tuf B450 PLUS Gaming motherboard with a Ryzen 5 3600 processor. I'm considering upgrading to a Ryzen 9 5900X (Vermeer). I'm curious if Vermeer is a valid option and if the upgrade would make a noticeable difference. My system already has an NVMe drive, 32GB DDR4 RAM, and it's used for office tasks, streaming, and some gaming. I'm wondering if this upgrade is worth the investment. The CPU is priced around £350 or $430, but I might wait to see how it performs. If I decide to go ahead, do I need a BIOS update? Should I install it before or after the new chip? Would a different cooler be necessary? I'm not sure about the current setup and whether an X board would be a better fit. Thanks in advance for your help.
The title mentions i9 because it's a common reference for AMD's Zen 3 architecture, even though the focus is on hardware like the Ryzen 5xxx series. It's similar to how people might use 'i5' or 'i7' for any processor in that line. The mention of cooler compatibility adds another layer of context but doesn't change the core reference.
There might be a variation. (Vermeer refers to the CPU lineup, also known as its code name in development.) It depends on the software running. Netflix won't work, gaming could be possible, office tasks vary by what's active. BIOS Update: Likely yes, before you upgrade your cooler, it might help with a B450 for a 5900X
The majority won't manage it smoothly; a few succeed, but they cost more. Also, 12,700k doesn't equate to a better value than 5,950x.
Thanks for your feedback. After updating to the new BIOS, you’ll likely need to restart the system for it to activate. It’s not necessary to shut down or install a new CPU unless you’re replacing it. The updated BIOS should still manage the PC with the existing hardware. To obtain the new BIOS, visit the manufacturer’s official website—such as Asus—and search for your specific model number.
