Hello, I own an older build featuring an i7 920. I’m looking to upgrade the CPU for a lighter gaming setup. After checking the CPU list, I thought the i7-995X would be ideal but it’s quite pricey. I discovered the Xeon X5690 instead. Does this processor fit the same motherboard? Thanks for your assistance!

Certain manufacturers restrict chip compatibility, which might explain why... If Acer hadn’t enforced it, the X5690 could function. But since they did, it won’t. You’d need someone who’s already tried it or risk the attempt yourself. It seems it won’t work with X56xx Xeons—see the discussion here: https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-C...-FOR-M7720

A similar choice to the X5690 could be the i7 980, with just a 4% variation in clock speed. It seems to be priced similarly on eBay.

If you can acquire the CPU for just a bit more than shipping costs, go ahead. Keep in mind that the platform is well beyond ten years, so adjust your expectations. Sandy Bridge and Haswell each marked substantial progress. If possible, continue saving for a full system upgrade. I don’t believe it’s worthwhile to spend a large sum on this. The X5690 offers two extra cores compared to the i7 960.

I see, you wanted to type "i7 980" and double-checked for six cores. The brain might have confused it with something else.
