The recommended route for better gaming performance is the R5 3600 upgrade.
I wouldn't upgrade right away. I'd wait to check if your graphics card works with the next generation—some models might not fit. There should be more capacity with the 3600, but that's just a thought, not a strong reason. I own an R7 1700 and am wondering if it will work with them. If not, I might stick with this CPU for another few years. It's frustrating not being able to cap your monitor's resolution, but unless you choose an Intel CPU and OC, you probably won't push performance enough to hit the limit. I know that wasn't exactly what you asked, but I thought it was worth considering. Just remember, two cents can make a difference.
Push the CPU to its limits for maximum performance. Expect huge improvements and keep it that way. If you can reach speeds similar to mine, you'll match a R5 3600 at normal settings. My setup has RR2 fully overclocked while RR1 remains stock. Very close builds. A 1500 point boost in Firestrike just by tweaking the CPU. Check out the link in my post.
