Upgrade to 256GB DDR5 RAM but system fails to boot.
Hello, I see you're dealing with a RAM upgrade on your current setup. Your system runs an Intel Core i9-12900KF with a DDR5 Z690-A motherboard, RX 6600 GPU, and 32GB of 5600MHz DDR5 RAM. You’ve added four 64GB Crucial DDR5 sticks, which brings your total RAM to 256GB. The power supply and storage components appear to be in good condition.
The issue you’re experiencing—brief DRAM LED flashes followed by silence—could indicate a power or communication problem. Since the system powers on but doesn’t display any output, it may be stuck in a low-power state or failing to initialize properly. Check the RAM connections, ensure all cables are secure, and verify that the motherboard’s BIOS supports XMP 3.0/EXPO profiles for your new sticks. Also, confirm that the CPU and GPU are compatible with the new RAM speed (5600MHz).
If the problem persists, consider testing the RAM in dual-channel mode or using a different profile to rule out conflicts. Let me know if you need further troubleshooting steps.
Well yeah the 12900k only supports 128gb of ram. Also link to the ram? 64gb single sticks of udimm ddr5 dont exist yet. Or well shouldnt be released yet. Whats the usecase btw?
Have you checked if the BIOS is current? This change isn’t likely to work with older BIOS versions since they aren’t supported. The manufacturer’s documentation lists 192GB and doesn’t recommend dual sticks either. What would happen if you used only two sticks? How long did you wait for a response?
Start by confirming you're using a reasonably recent BIOS version. It doesn’t have to be cutting-edge, but it should have official support for at least 64GB DIMMs. If you’re unsure, upgrade to the newest BIOS. Should problems persist after updating, switch to single sticks in slots A2 and B2 (slots numbered 2 and 4 from the CPU). Using four DDR5 sticks can cause compatibility issues, so consider starting with one stick and progressing if needed. If none of the sticks boot independently, reach out to MSI for a custom BIOS or check if a solution is being developed.
I purchased this from Crucial, originally from the manufacturer on Amazon. Even though 256GB isn't available, I used 128GB and still couldn't boot.
Give enough time for RAM training. The process may take longer.
Ok then cmos reset, try 2 sticks and wait like half an hour. There is a VERY good chance this just flat out isn't supported as @RONOTHAN## pointed out that they are brand new on the market. I wasn't even aware they released yet only knew that later spring was a target for it. But yeah this is first gen brand new tech and using these sorts of ram kits on older hardware that didn't have it exist at the time can cause these issues. Happened during ddr2 and 3 a lot for 4gb ddr2 sticks and when ddr3 went to 8gb sticks. So basically wait a long time with 2 sticks and if that doesn't work it's most likely correct to assume that these are just not compatible with the hardware at this point.
I’ve talked to both MSI and Crucial about this matter. Sadly, neither could provide a clear answer, probably because my motherboard isn’t equipped for the technology in question. MSI said the feature is still emerging and they haven’t tested it yet, so they advised holding off until an official update on UDIMM support appears. They think the most realistic scenario is that my motherboard doesn’t support it.
Check specifications carefully for Intel Core i912900K. Official support reaches up to 128GB, though higher capacities aren't guaranteed. I received 96GB on a 12600h model that only supports 64GB, which seems more manageable and likely uses a comparable controller. For alternatives, consider Optane as a page file solution. Most RAM beyond 128GB probably isn't utilized much, maintaining similar performance.
