I've been using a GTX 1080 (Rog Strix edition) with an i5-6500, and I'm trying to find a better CPU that works well together. My motherboard only supports Intel up to the 7th generation, so I was considering switching to AMD. Regardless, I need a new motherboard that can handle whatever CPU I choose. This brings me to the main issue: budget. A good option should fit my price range and offer solid value. Something around $400 to $500 total—motherboard included—would be ideal. Just a quick note, since I'm in Australia, using this estimate might help you pick the right parts more effectively. Thanks!

You could also use an AMD processor instead of an i5 10600k with the right motherboard.

Look for a used i7 that’s still working well; it should last until you have enough savings for a full upgrade.

I suggest considering a modest upgrade now, such as a compatible i7, and accumulating funds for a full overhaul later. Most experts advise focusing on your motherboard and CPU first. According to au.pcpartpicker, an MSI B450 Tomahawk Max (popular for its strong VRM cooling and ample cache) paired with a Ryzen 5 3600 (excellent third-gen performance) comes close to $500. If budget is tight, the Tomahawk Max with a Ryzen 5 1600 AFBOX will cost about $100 less but offers only marginal improvements. Both chips share the same 6C12T package and the 1600 uses an older process with reduced speeds, yet remains a solid value option.
