I recently got my Zephyrus G14 2023 with an RTX 4060, a 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM. I’m thinking about upgrading both the SSD and RAM. I noticed only one M.2 NVMe slot for the SSD, but I want to install a 2TB SSD like the Samsung 990 Pro. My concern is whether backing up the operating system is required or if simply swapping the 512GB SSD for the larger one would work. The laptop might reinstall the OS during the process. Thanks to anyone with advice!

The 990s appear to deteriorate more quickly than the rest, and the difference is significant. Consider an alternative approach.

Backing up means creating a copy of important data to protect it. Reinstalling refers to restoring the system or software from scratch after a reset or reinstall.

No, this won't work on its own. It won't function without your intervention. You have two choices: 1) Perform a fresh installation by creating a bootable USB drive (download here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software.../windows11). You'll need to install everything yourself and back up your files beforehand. 2) Duplicate your current NVMe drive onto a new one. This requires either an external NVMe enclosure or a motherboard with an available NVMe port. Cloning tools like Clonezilla, Macrium Reflect, or some SSD manufacturer utilities can handle this automatically. You won't need to manually set up your old software or back up data, as cloning will manage that. Make sure you understand how to select the appropriate RAM type—most laptops don't allow simple MHz and XMP settings; consult JEDEC guidelines.

I'm unsure about the details. Do you need guidance on whether to move old SSD data before swapping it out?

I received the RAM as specified frequency and form factor in Task Manager, which are 4800 and SODIMM. Thanks sr/mdm, it’s really helpful.
