Consider upgrading with a Z87 sabertooth, an i5 4670K, and 16GB of RAM. An i5 9600K might not be ideal. You’re unsure about AMD right now, but you’re planning to overclock again since your current Haswell is at 4.5.

I prefer a Ryzen because you'll need to purchase a new board and RAM. I suggest either a 3600(X) or 3700(X) for a board you might find useful in the updated motherboard guide v2. If you're keen on spending more for better performance, go for a B550 or X570. You might also consider the 3950X if you want top-tier upgrades.

It's an excellent option, this CPU performs really well, particularly for gaming.

Right now the market isn't ideal; you usually find the top 3600 options available at lower prices or similar performance, making it a more favorable CPU choice overall.

It feels similar to an i7 8700; I’d pick it over the i5 8600 or 9600 any time. @Jsmunk What’s the rest of the setup (power supply, graphics card)? What game resolution do you prefer?

i5 4670k (4,5ghz) Darkrock Pro 4 Asus z87 sabertooth 16GB DDR3 1333Mhz GTX 1060 3gb I previously owned an 780ti which I bought for around 900 dollars two years ago and it failed, unfortunately I didn’t have the funds to upgrade. Corsair CX750M 750W I mostly use a 1080p BenQ GW2760HS as my main screen but would really appreciate the chance to switch to 1440p when I can afford a better monitor and GPU. I’m aiming to keep my CPU, motherboard, and RAM around 700 dollars if possible, but I’m willing to save another month if it helps. Thanks for all the feedback so far.

This seems to be the right option, skipping storage costs as it exceeds the budget. The total comes to $850 after purchasing the parts in Denmark. Note: the price listed doesn't include the M.2 module, which is great!

You can cut costs on a B450 tomahawk Max by opting for a cheaper model, though the lack of PCI4 might limit its usefulness at the moment.

You might also consider adding a mid-range GPU if you manage to secure a decent 2700x, b450 tomahawk, and 3200mhz memory.
