Update your post to include full system hardware specs and full OS information. (XP noted - SP?)
Include PSU and disk drive(s).
Case: make and model?
Regarding DDR Capacities:
DDR Capacities
Reference the table.

Another XFX NVIDIA GeForce 6800XT (PVT42KUDE3) with 256MB GDDR3 SDRAM AGP graphics card is available on eBay. A similar ATI GPU exists, though older models had different shader versions and memory capacities. System total RAM was typically limited to around 4GB. No recent activity on hard drive usage was noted.

The quickest AGP card would be the Radeon HD 3850, with the Radeon HD 4670 and 4650 coming in close behind. Those models are a bit expensive now, so what CPU are you matching them with and which game titles are you mainly playing? There were 2GB DDR dimms, but they were mostly ECC and mainly used for servers, so 1GB dimms would be your realistic limit. As long as you connect the positive and negative signals correctly, it should function. You might want to inspect the cable for any damage; otherwise it’s likely a faulty LED and you should replace it. It could also be a short on the board, but stability problems would probably be noticeable if that were the case.
