This could be a simple question, but many factors are involved, so I’m trying to be sure. If you’re using Windows 7, there’s usually a free upgrade to 10. I’m concerned though because I plan to wait until after Windows 10 releases before building my PC. Now that I’m moving in August, I’d rather delay the upgrade and avoid upgrading my brand new machine. That means I can’t install it without “reserving” it. Or is that just a formality? Also, I’m worried about using my copy of Windows 7—it’s an OEM product. Since my friends used it on their Macs, it seems there’s a chance I could still use it on my new PC. My friend has also switched from OEM copies to PC versions. But as a backup plan, I was thinking I might get the Student edition of 8.1 if I can’t install Windows 7. Now that I’m building my new PC, would it make sense to buy Windows 10 after it’s released, or could I still use 7 or 8.1 once 10 is available? I feel like Microsoft might not allow that.

upgrade window lasts one year starting from July 29, and after upgrading it's easy to reinstall Windows 10 again.

It seems you're referring to a promotion or discount. You mentioned you'll be able to upgrade for free for a year after the release, and you encouraged others to join in.

From what I grasp, the reserve windows is just a way to get the download before the official release. It means the program will automatically install it even three days prior to the launch, so you can set it up right away. If you plan to build your PC later, you still have the option to upgrade Windows 10 for free over the course of a full year—don’t stress about it.

I understood the one-year period, but I was concerned it might not be valid after Windows 10 updates. Thanks! I’m hoping it will function then and help me save more than $70.
