Hey, I understand your situation. Your 4770k is showing signs of aging, and performance drops affect both gaming and work tasks. You're considering upgrading to a 3950X or premium X570 board, but you're thinking about switching to a Ryzen 4000 when it arrives. Right now you're planning to buy a ROG VIII hero board with a 3xxx processor, possibly selling that later. Decide whether to go for the 3xxx lineup or explore other options based on your needs and budget.
You might consider purchasing a premium X570 board, pairing it with a 3100, and upgrading in the future if needed.
In early 2018 my old machine stopped working and I didn’t have money for a new one, so I went without for about nine months until I could afford it. It was during the summer when I played games on other devices like an old Wii or Apple TV until I could buy the new PC I wanted. Around that time, CoffeeLake had released its product and things had improved, making it easier to get a decent model at good prices.
It doesn’t make much sense buying a 3100 or 3300X when you could achieve better results with the 4770k. Your issue seems to stem from low core count, so if you need something more powerful now, aim for at least a 3700X. The price drop was likely to support Intel’s 10th gen launch and meet your multitasking needs.
I'm facing the same situation but with an i7-4790k. I'm eagerly looking forward to getting a Ryzen 4xxx.
