Hello Together, for some time now, I run a Ryzen 5 2600 paired with a RTX 3060 Ti. I wonder if the 3060 is capable of more if I upgrade the CPU to a 3600 or 5600 or an even better CPU. At the moment I'm gaming only at 60 FPS until I decide to buy a 144HZ Monitor. Of course PCIe 4.0 will be a topic but then I need to change my Mainboard too. Full Specs: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti FE Gigabyte Aorus Ultra Gaming x470 Patriot Viper 4 16GB@3200MHz PNY XLR8 CS3030 1TB Kingston A2000 1TB

When using 1440p, the boost from a 5600x on a 3060ti would be around 20-25%. The 3060ti is valued at about $800, so 25% equals roughly $200. It's not a huge upgrade, but it's worth considering. Just ensure the BIOS supports the 5600x for optimal performance.

At 60 FPS your processor should handle everything smoothly. However, for speeds above that (such as 144hz), it will definitely become a limitation. Hardware Unboxed recently discussed this issue. Their perspective matches mine; moving to the 5000 series would boost performance, but it’s better to hold off until Alderlake releases, since it could disrupt the market and lead to price reductions on AMD products.

I understand your situation with the monitor limitations. If upgrading isn't an option, then focusing on other improvements makes sense. I’d consider moving to a higher resolution display if possible, otherwise staying within the current specs might be the best path forward.

usually i'd only get concerned about GPU limits when going past 85fps, and this matters mainly for certain titles. At 60fps, the 2600 seems suitable for about 99% of games.

I'm also using a R5 2600 with an older GPU and it's working well at 1440p 144hz, though not all games run smoothly. Upgrading to a Ryzen 5000 would likely help more, as you might see similar improvements in your setup. The 2600 is quite comparable to a 3600, and when overclocked it could perform better than a 3600, but it lacks the single-core speed. If you're playing at 1080p 60fps, you're limiting the GPU's potential, but it's still usable for now with high settings. I recommend upgrading to an R5 5600X later and getting a monitor that supports 1440p at 144hz or higher.

Absolutely, boost the monitor. It’s a major improvement for gaming and everyday tasks, especially at 1080p or 60Hz. Your 3060ti is lagging behind.

Absolutely understand that point. Relying solely on optimism isn't realistic, particularly given the current situation. However, with Intel's latest chips still out of our grasp and AMD releasing new models soon, it seems likely that today's high-end processors will become more affordable.

Thank you for your advice. I plan to begin with a monitor upgrade, then check my CPU and GPU usage once more. Perhaps prices will decrease, or they might stay the same. We'll find out.

I waited a few months. The Intel 12th generation launch was on the horizon, and AMD was rumored to release a 5600X processor soon. It looked like a great deal wouldn’t be hard to miss.
