They have an i3-9100 on a Gigabyte B365M DS3H board. They're considering switching to an i5 or i7 without overclocking, keeping the processor at its default speed. The current CPU isn't sufficient for their needs anymore.

The main distinctions between an i3 and i7 from the same generation are: more cores, higher clock speeds, and increased power usage. I’d confirm the power supply can manage a stronger processor; otherwise, there’s no apparent issue. You won’t lose CPU performance if you upgrade—just make sure it’s an 8th or 9th generation model, as that’s what the motherboard supports. Otherwise, hope your friend gets what they need!

They're limited to the 9th generation since they don't plan to assemble a completely new system. The existing components were assembled from parts already available. They have a 500W power supply unit, and using the PSU calculator showed that with an i7-9700K it would draw around 225W. The main concern was whether my friend would pay for an i7 and still experience throttling due to inadequate VRMs or similar issues. It's reassuring that the i7 wouldn't cause performance drops on the motherboard.

The 9700K would damage the VRM on the motherboard. For that setup I suggest an i5 processor (8400/8500/8600/9400/9500/9600) at its highest setting. A 9100 isn’t sufficient—what you need depends on your needs. With only 8GB RAM and a 120GB SSD, the system feels tight; more RAM would make the storage feel cramped.

Thanks for the details. I can confirm the information about the VRM setup. They rely on a PC running Excel, screen recordings, basic video editing, photo editing, and gaming. They’re looking for a reasonable price on a mid to high-end GPU before making a purchase. A 16GB RAM and a 1TB NVMe SSD have already been bought, but installation is still pending.
