Hi everyone. I'm looking to upgrade my Asus GL12CP setup with an Intel i5-8400 at 2.80GHz. The system has 2x 8GB RAM, a GTX1050 graphics card, and a 1TB M.2 drive that was swapped out for a larger 1TB SSD. I also replaced the original 120GB drive with a 2TB Samsung 860EVO SSD. The CPU cooler came with the new system two years ago. I'm considering a GPU upgrade and possibly a better CPU fan, but I want options that are affordable. Any recommendations? Thanks, Joe.
Unless there are strong downdrafts, it’s best not to swap the cooler since you can’t push the CPU beyond its limits. The graphics card is simple to enhance, but you’ll likely have to replace the power supply unit.
Hey there, I'm a bit late but I've got most of the same specs as you except for the processor (i7 8700). I started with the CPU cooler and switched to Corsair H55 water cooling to cut down on noise. For the power supply, the one I had was pretty bad (550w), so I upgraded to a Cooler Master MWE 750W V2 - Bronze. This lets you use RTX cards but due to the case, you'll only be able to use twin fan GPUs max. Regarding RAM, I think you probably don't reach the full 2666MHz since the motherboard is set for lower speeds. If your RAM supports XMP, you won't be able to turn it on because the BIOS is locked. I asked ASUS support about this. If it's not a big deal, go ahead; just remember the PCIe X16 you got is outdated. For a GTX 1080 upgrade it should work fine, but if you're thinking about switching to an RTX model, maybe changing the board would be better. I just bought an ASRock B365 HDV and will let you know if you want updates. But the CPU cooler is really lacking for your prebuild GL12CP. Hey, just posting here even if I dont think you check this thread anymore, it ccould help someone else. So as I told you, I changed the motherboard of the GL12 to have better performance, and It didn't go well. The GL12 has a tiny motherboard module in the upper side of the front panel where the usb are. And de cables are proprietaries ones. So the whole front pannel wasn't working anymore, I had to change the hole cade to be abble to use everything again. So long story short, the GL12 has little possibility for evolution, and if you want to have something that will stay for years, just keep the cpu and the news things you bought, because it's kinda difficult to upgrade it correctly (and the tower is so small that every upgrade is a painful).
