Hey there, I've been working on selling my old AMD FX for two months now. No one seems interested, even at 150€. I'm not sure what to do with it—I don’t want to just throw it away since it was top-of-the-line back in 1992. It had a 92mm Noctua cooler, 16GB Vengeance RAM, a 990FX ASUS board, and a 500GB SATA SSD. I don’t plan to build a NAS with it because the FX is really power-hungry for that purpose. I was thinking about an Arcade-style setup like Linus did, but the buttons are pretty expensive. Any ideas?
Sell each component separately. Consider keeping the SSD for media; it could fit nicely in a USB case for portable use.
It’s usually something most folks skip until it drops low enough to matter.
It's really lacking sufficient efficiency in terms of power output per watt these days.
I posted this dump of raw sewage on Facebook Marketplace for $75. It sold in under a day: PCPartPicker Part List Type Item Price CPU AMD FX-6300 3.5 GHz 6-Core Processor Bought For $89.00 CPU Cooler Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing Bought For $29.99 Motherboard Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P ATX AM3+/AM3 Purchased For $81.99 Memory Corsair Vengeance 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR3-1600 CL9 Bought For $76.29 Case Sentey GS-6020 ATX Mid Tower Purchased For $64.99 Power Supply Sentey 650 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply Bought For $54.99 All costs—shipping, taxes, rebates, discounts—total $397.25. This was done without a GPU or drives; the buyer knew it wouldn’t boot. Don’t waste your money here. Reusing it would be a huge loss of time and power.
I support the others in selling components separately and then bundling the CPU and motherboard together. If that combo doesn’t sell, consider keeping the parts as displays (as I did with my FX-8350 and ASUS Crosshair IV Formula) or giving them away.
