Hey everyone, seeking some guidance. I'm planning to upgrade my CPU and RAM. My current setup includes an i9 9900k processor, Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU, 128GB of 3600MHz DDR4 RAM, an Nzxt 850W PSU, a Nzxt Z370 motherboard, and storage with two 990 Evos 2TB drives. I mostly use the PC for gaming but also do a lot of 3D modeling and graphic design—GTA, BeamNG, Skate, Cyberpunk, Tarkov, Star Citizen, plus tools like Blender, 3ds Max, Substance Painter, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Tomorrow I'm heading to Micro Center, and I'm struggling to decide between the 14900K and 12900K bundles. The main concern is whether the price difference between those models really adds up in terms of performance.
Based on how long you've used your current setup, I strongly suggest considering AMD. The AM5 lineup is set to launch another iteration soon, with leaks suggesting core counts could rise to 24. This opens up a significant upgrade route, even if you start with the 9950X. Unless you prioritize AVX-512 enhancements, the performance of the 7000 and 9000 series (excluding X3D chips) remains comparable in gaming and 3D work. The 7950X or 9950X would match the speed of the 14900K in most scenarios.
