Upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1
Upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1
Earlier I switched to Windows 8.1 and some of my programs stopped working properly, so I chose to reinstall it fresh. Now I’m thinking about upgrading back to Windows 8.1. Can I remove the old Windows installation files after moving my data? Or will I need to reinstall everything again? Also, could you clarify what changes Windows 8.1 makes to file locations? That would be really helpful!
You have the option to remove the old windows.old file once you complete the transfer. It only uses storage space.
The process of moving programs and files can vary; some are simpler than others. Reinstalling often ensures a fresh start, while transferring might be quicker if done correctly.
When you first installed Windows 8 on top of the original 8.1 version, the only remnants you can get from Windows.old are files. Programs usually need to be reinstalled unless it's a direct in-place upgrade like moving from 8 to 8.1, which doesn't produce a Windows.old folder.
When upgrading from Win8 to Win8.1, you need to ensure all settings and configurations match the previous version exactly.
