Hello, I spent some time browsing the web and came across many mixed views. That’s making it hard to decide. I’m here to find some useful tech advice for my setup. My system includes an MSI B85-G43 motherboard, an i5 4460 CPU at 3.2GHz (original), 16GB DDR3 RAM at 1600MHz, and a GTX 960 GPU with overclocking enabled via the afterburner. The machine was built about 16 months ago, and I’m using a Samsung S27E330 monitor that supports 1080p, not higher resolutions. I can play games smoothly and enjoy high-ultra settings. My operating system is Windows 7, and I’m curious—will upgrading to Windows 10 with the latest DirectX improve my experience? Thanks for any suggestions!

They might boost speed, but only if the game allows it.

the games will remain the same appearance. performance stays consistent between dx11 and dx12, especially with nvidia graphics. there aren't many dx12 titles available and they might not appear for a while. i wouldn't consider upgrading right now.

DX12 delivers comparable results or inferior performance across the majority of Nvidia titles.

DX12 offers minimal performance gains in most scenarios. For more details, see the review here: https://www.hardocp.com/article/2017/03/...ard_review. You don’t have to rush upgrading to Windows 10 just yet if this is your main concern.

Focusing on the nice RotTR project really made me think about changing to DX12. If I’m interpreting it right, I might see a few more frames per second—or even drop some—but the game’s appearance should remain unchanged. I chose the ultra or very high setting, lowering texture quality only slightly since the game warned against it when my VRAM was under 4GB. In testing, I averaged around 53.5 fps in-game and 58 with the afterburner effect, which is more than enough for me. What matters most to me now are faster load times, something I’ll achieve once I upgrade to an SSD (which I can’t afford right now). So I think I’ll stick with Windows 7. This experience reminds me of when I first built this and played Far Cry 3—I switched to DX12 to see the impact, but I didn’t remember exactly which version made such a difference. Hopefully this time it will work similarly.
