Hello, I'm considering a switch to the new Ampere graphics cards when they release if they look promising. Right now I own a 1070Ti and plan to upgrade with NVIDIA for better ray tracing. My CPU is a Ryzen 7 2700X, which I mostly use for game development, 3D work, and photo editing in Photoshop. It's often running near full capacity. I'm thinking about getting both upgrades at once when prices drop.
Should I compare a Ryzen 7 2700X to a Ryzen 9 3900X upgrade? Would the older CPU limit performance with these new cards? Is ray tracing still a solid reason to choose NVIDIA, or has AMD caught up? Also, I want to upgrade the GPU specifically for ray tracing since I use E-cycles in Blender, which can boost renders up to four times faster. I noticed my multitasking load is high, so a CPU upgrade might make a bigger difference in how I experience it. I built the system back in April 2018.
It's definitely an improvement, particularly for multi-threaded tasks. If you're happy with the existing speed, hold off on Zen 3 and see how it performs. The 2700x remains solid for this workload, though results depend on the project size.
In single-threaded scenarios, performance could be better but remains uncertain. For gaming, it's still more of a novelty—we can't predict how ampere will affect it. Overall, keep an eye on Zen 3, Ampere, and the upcoming Navi updates before deciding what to try next.
