I intend to replace my outdated PC by swapping it with a motherboard from a Dell Vostro 260 to an Intel i7-3770k. I'm checking if this upgrade will work with the existing CPU, which is an Intel Core i3-2120.

To get the X79 chipset, you'll need a new motherboard. Everything seems fine otherwise! Also, the Dell Vostro 260 uses the H61 chipset.

I possess a 3770K with LGA 1155 compatibility. It runs on an MSI B75MA-P45, and I verify H61 works with Ivy Bridge CPUs after a BIOS update.

No reason to get a K cpu as you will not be able to overclock it on an OEM board.

The K-series typically performs better than the non-K versions of a processor. As discussed earlier, I own a unit built for a B75 chipset.
