You might need to wait until Windows 10 reaches its end-of-life date, which is typically around June 2024, depending on the version. Even if you're using a Windows 8.1 license, continuing to use Windows 10 could involve ongoing costs for support or upgrades.

I understand once upgrades stop being possible. After that point it seems impossible for me.

That sounds frustrating. Using a Windows 10 ISO with an older Windows 8.1 key might not be compatible.

Launch occurred on July 29. Upgrading after that date requires payment.

Really, it's disappointing since I've already upgraded to it.

You've got plenty of time left—over nine months to make the switch if you wish. It seems likely Microsoft would prefer to keep the upgrade window extended beyond July 29, 2016, though this is just my take.
