Yes, there are other CPUs with higher speeds than the Pentium D 3.4GHz that some motherboards support, such as the Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600.

They attempted a core 2 upgrade, but it didn't work. The system feels outdated, around 13 years old.

Discard the old artifact. You’ll receive a core i5 for roughly $100 used.

I planned to install a very affordable yet functional CPU, similar to an RX 580, to mine cryptocurrency. The idle power usage is relatively low.

In a P4 design you’ll probably face issues with the "semi-usable" section. Those pipelines are already problematic, making even the quickest solutions ineffective.

Using mining on any GPU consumes more energy than it generates. People have switched to quicker alternatives again. Just let it be. Also, the idle power usage on a P4 or Pentium D isn't minimal.

It’s best to discard the system and purchase a budget refurbished core2 or an older i3/i5 office PC based on your needs. The current platform won’t provide good value.
