It could potentially help, though I question its impact on speed.

A varied processor can help improve speed, especially if you're running minimal tasks such as browsing and chatting apps.

The two CPUs were launched just a quarter apart. They share the same architecture, both offer dual cores, and operate at identical clock speeds. Although the P9550 includes 6 MB of cache versus 3, performance is more likely constrained by your storage speed and available RAM.

Using a more efficient method will speed things up the most.

It's only a slight issue. Adding a SSD and more RAM would make a big difference if the device is limited to 4GB. Still, older systems have their limits.

You already have a 240GB WD Green SSD and 8GB of 1600MHz Kingston DDR3 RAM. Adding a different CPU, such as a quad-core processor, may improve performance but won't change the storage setup.

Hi fellow Thinkpad owner @kes2006 ! Apart from more RAM and a faster SSD, there is one more very efficient way of making this device faster: Cleaning the CPU cooler and re-newing the thermal paste between the cooler and the CPU. If not properly cooled (i.e. if there is just some dust in the cooler), those machines throttle a lot . There are maintenance manuals explaining how to remove the cooler for servicing (i.e. cleaning).

I've already finished the cleanup and re-applied the thermal paste. The T500 seems to have a different cooler setup; mine includes three heat pipes and still stays cool.
