I totally understand why you'd pick Ryzen. However, since gaming is your main focus, opting for a new motherboard might be more cost-effective for the Ryzen i7 compared to what you think. Maybe I'm mistaken after all!
The 3000 series won’t face major performance issues from a 9600k processor in typical gaming tasks, aside from the most demanding CPU-heavy games—usually just unoptimized titles. Upgrading is probably unnecessary unless you have other workloads that gain from more cores, PCIe Gen 4, or newer platform capabilities.
For context, I’ve been running the 4770K for about seven years and recently paired it with an RTX 2080. This CPU has never slowed gaming performance significantly, except in a few cases among dozens of games. It handled streaming at 1080p with 6000 Kbps while using OBS and animations smoothly. Compared to the 2080, this chip is still behind, but it’s catching up for more advanced features like PCIe Gen 4 and NVMe storage. I’m considering switching to the 3950X next week mainly because I need PCIe Gen 4, faster NVMe drives, and a quicker CPU for editing 4k and 8k footage in Premiere Pro.
Ryzen offers solid performance for gaming, especially in certain games. The value of used Z390 and Z370 boards is decent, which means you might recoup a significant portion of your investment. After accounting for the costs—around $250 for the i5 and possibly $150 for the motherboard—you could even turn a profit with a $120 board and a $200 CPU replacement.
