The 5800X3D clearly shines for 1080P high refresh rate gaming. However, it's wise to review the benchmarks of the games you play to see if the advantages of the 5800X3D justify the price difference.

it's essentially the same chip, so the cheaper option is what I chose for my 3D setup. though nobody plays there anymore. in any case, the 3D still outperforms most CPUs at 1440p, which isn't fully accurate. honestly, if it means high FPS, then even without knowing the exact impact of a 1080Ti, I'd pick 3D. one of its main benefits is better low-pass filtering, which seems important for that goal. personally, I run locked at 60 on a monitor with a high refresh rate (165Hz), and it does feel smooth. i'm not sure how much difference it would make compared to a 5800x, but it works well.

It doesn’t matter which chip is used; clearly he’s targeting 1080p since he mentioned that.

I’d really wait for the 7000 series 3D chips and plan a platform upgrade.

I upgraded from a B350 board with a 1700 to a 5600. The overall performance jump is noticeable beyond just gaming. It definitely makes sense to upgrade—going to a 5700x would offer even more improvement than an 1800x.
