Upgrade Asus Crosshair VII Hero with WiFi and AMD3950x processor.
Hello, I'm researching the 3950x CPU. I'm hoping to find out how much performance gain it offers compared to my current 2700x. I'm using my setup for gaming, school projects (like running virtual machines), and side tasks. I'm not ready to buy a new motherboard but am open to getting a 3950X at a reasonable price. My plan is to build a new system in about 1.5 to 2 years and use this machine as my server, needing both power and multiple VMs later on.
The 16-core setup represents a significant upgrade, but for gaming I’d suggest going with a 3900X due to its better value and faster clocks. The boost in turbo performance would be even more noticeable with a bit of light undervolting.
I understand your point, but it's hard to say how much the upgrade will help with a 2700x resolution. Can you tell me what GPU you're using? Also, what's your monitor's resolution and refresh rate? Right now I think if you're seeing frame rate issues, it's probably because your games are limited by your graphics card. You might want to tweak settings or upgrade your hardware.
I get what you're referring to for 3900x, but I can secure this through a friend of a friend who plans to sell a 3950X. That’s why I’m wondering if it’s worth splurging and getting it. I don’t have any gaming issues—I’m using an EVGA 2080 Super FTW Ultra at 1400p and 165hz monitors, so I feel confident. I also considered the workstation side, running VMs, and having extra CPU could be useful.
If you're hosting many virtual machines and you're receiving this CPU at a favorable rate from someone, it could be a good investment.
