Upgrade AMD A4-5300 processor
Hi, the situation looks like a good upgrade opportunity. His current setup is limited by the CPU, which is an AMD A4 5300 and likely not powerful enough for modern games or heavy tasks. The Dell Precision T3500 offers a solid upgrade path with a more capable processor and better performance. Since he mainly plays Minecraft and does light office work, the boost will be noticeable but not extreme. The Xeon X5675 should provide a noticeable improvement over the GT610 GPU.
It makes sense to wait a couple of years if prices stabilize, but if you need a reliable system now, building it yourself could be better. Overall, it’s a sensible move for an upgrade rather than a permanent purchase. Let me know your thoughts!
3 years from now you'll likely be playing with budget gaming options, yet they should still perform well in most titles. The Xeon offers more cores and stronger single-core speed even with lower clock speeds, making it a solid upgrade (especially affordable at around e75) and lasting several more years. YET, I need a better graphics card—GT 710, GTX 750TI or GT 1030 will far outperform the 610. Modern integrated graphics usually handle this card better. I’m pretty sure the GPU isn’t the main issue! Prioritize that upgrade first.
Hi, thanks for your response. He has a budget of £500 but prefers to wait until the mining craze subsides before spending now. We're looking for an affordable GPU, as anything significantly cheaper at a reasonable price would be ideal—otherwise we'd consider models like the RX 550 or GTX 750.
Secure an HD 7790! It delivers slightly improved performance compared to the 750Ti and is currently listed on Craigslist for $60 to $80 USD. The 7870 also shows better results, priced around $70 to $90 USD. That fits your budget? @RTX 3090 (as requested in your signature)
Actually, RAM speed might be the main issue here. I used a 1050TI on a Xeon E5-1650 tower (one generation newer), and about 90% of the time it was the CPU that limited performance. The graphics cards I connected should work better either way, as long as they can supply enough power.
The machine performs well, and the CPU works nicely with the T3500. The stock cooler should suffice without extra cooling. The GT 610 presents a significant problem; you’ll need a much better option. For Minecraft with a stronger GPU, the T3500 is fine, particularly considering its value.
