My sons pc
600 watt PSU
Asrock b560m-c
I5 11400f
Rtx 2060
Still functions well in most settings at 1080p, though he’s beginning to have trouble with the latest games. He enjoys a variety of titles: Tarkov, COD, Spider-Man, God of War, etc.
Not planning to replace the motherboard or PSU.
What upgrade would be more beneficial—CPU or GPU?
I don’t always keep up with the newest hardware, but I was considering an i5-13600. Would that provide a solid improvement? $200 seems reasonable for me, though not too tight. If I can afford more, I could go for a bigger jump later.
P.S. If it really matters, he’ll be landing his first job this summer and might want to upgrade then.

The motherboard isn't compatible with that CPU. To use it, you'll need an 11th generation processor.

Make sure to verify that, it might need a different power source or could be limited by the CPU.

It relies on the specific model, design, and age of the PSU. A suitable 550W unit should be adequate for that card.

Are you in proximity to a Microcenter? They currently offer appealing bundled offers on CPUs, boards, and RAM at reasonable rates. Also, this setup seems excessive according to my perspective, but it’s worth thinking about replacing the 4060. It’s just an average chipset at best. Look at this rx 6800xt for $350. It really needs a more robust PSU.

That card will also comfortably support 1440p if you plan to upgrade your monitor later. Plus, a bonus when you go for 1440p—you won’t require such a powerful CPU then.
The key point is that usually at 1440p resolution, a more capable GPU is necessary. I’d say that if you move to 1440p, the visual quality will be significantly better than at 1080p.
I just purchased this monitor yesterday and it’s a great value for the price.

That could open up several possibilities.

Some titles are restricted by graphics capabilities, such as fast action shooters.
Others are constrained by CPU speed, like strategy, sims, and multiplayer games.
Multiplayer usually benefits from more threads.
You must determine which one suits you best.
