Updating your fresh Windows 8 setup to version 8.1 in just ten minutes.
If your anything like me and install fresh Windows installations on customers laptops and PC's which have a windows 8, not windows 8.1 key, you may have come across Windows taking a long time to install and configure the Windows updates for 8, before 8.1 even becomes available in the store. Not to mention when windows fails to configure updates and takes hours to boot back up to square one. However after digging and fine tuning and a little google search help over the last few months, i've come up with a simple walkthrough of how to get a fresh windows 8 downloading the 8.1 update. 1. Install windows 8 and the first thing to do is go straight to the classic windows update window before connecting to a network if possible. Start->Type "Windows Update"->Click Settings-> Find the one that doesn't have a cog, but a picture of a window with arrows coming out of it. You'll see what I mean when you see it. 2. On the left hand side, click the 'Change settings' window and change the drop down box to 'Never check for updates'. 3. Activate your internet connection 4. Go and click the 'check for updates' and wait for the 100 or so updates to pop up. 5. When they have loaded, untick the box nearest the top to untick all of the updates, Put the list in name order, and within the 'Updates for windows 8', look for kb2871389. Tick that one and install. 6. Let that one update download, install and configure, and if you did the first 2 steps, then you won't get any other unneeded updates taking up any time (8.1 comes pre-installed with all the windows 8 updates built in) 7. Go to windows store and the 8.1 update should be there and ready to click, so go for it. 8. Let the update download, configure and install as usual. 9. Reactivate windows updates to keep windows 8.1 up to date. Enjoy 8.1 alot sooner than you would have doing it the old way. I've been looking for a walkthrough like this for months so I hope this will save you guys as much time as it has with me.. Feel free to copy and share this and let me know what you think. Cheers, Jordan
