Updating Windows onto an SSD.
The file was copied, but the desktop is now empty except for basic shortcuts. I’m unsure what to do next. I thought everything would remain unchanged, like my Firefox and files, but they’re missing. I’m not panicking, just trying to figure out the next steps. Appreciate your help so far.
Besides the shortcuts, do the files remain reachable? Or does Windows block access to them?
Permissions appear stable after rebooting following the relocation of user files. However, shortcuts remain non-functional and applications like Firefox are missing bookmarks entirely. Unclear what’s happening.
Shortcuts you might try are resetting to a previous profile. In Firefox, this happens when a new install uses a different profile than the old one. You can check %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles and delete any missing folder—this should restore your settings. Firefox may seem confused at first, but it usually works fine once you do this before launching.
I've been assembling PCs for a while. It seems I've never really dabbled in software. If you want to reset everything, just delete the current files and start fresh from scratch? Maybe you should have asked about Firefox before diving into this. I'll follow your advice when I get back home, and I hope it works out. You're a lifesaver.
The shortcuts are leading to locations that aren't present yet. For example, if a Steam game is stored in a specific folder like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\SteamLib\common, but you haven't installed it there, it won't appear on your drive. Fixing these shortcuts seems harder than creating them from scratch.
I followed your directions for FireFox, but it didn't work. I adjusted the "launch profile xxxxx" settings and swapped in my original profile. Now I'm using my PC with all history and login details intact. Everything looks good on my desktop! Thanks again!
Sure, once you’re done with what you need and don’t have to transfer any apps—such as Steam titles—you can reorganize the whole storage space at that time.
Don't worry, my computer has been acting up again, so everything here was just a waste. Sorry, I'm frustrated. I only have four days left before college starts. I'm starting a thread now. Thanks for all the support with this. The SSD is performing great. Boot time is now under a quarter of what it used to be.
