I'm checking to reinstall Windows 8 (8.1) on my laptop, but I want to skip the extra software from Asus. I bought it two weeks ago and am not satisfied with the boot times. It freezes during startup, sleep doesn't work properly, and when I turn it back on it behaves like it was just shut down. Restarts always end with DRIVER_STATE_POWER_FAILURE. I also don’t like all the extra apps that changed the screen colors and other changes. I’m usually comfortable with partitions and OS installs, but this is really annoying. My main goal is an original Windows 8 copy. Apparently the key is built into the BIOS. I tried using the Windows 8 installer and a key finder, but none worked—the keys differ for each program. If I get a Windows 8 ISO and put it on a USB drive, will a regular installation detect the key in the BIOS? And so far I’ve used the ‘Create a Recovery Drive’ method, which seems to copy the recovery partition onto a USB. I’m confused about Asus’s recovery partitions—most laptops have just one, but this has eight total partitions (the second disk is the cache SSD). Questions: 1) Can I install a basic Windows 8 version that finds the key in the BIOS? 2) Where can I download a legitimate Windows 8 ISO? (I own a legal copy on my laptop.) 3) Does using the recovery drive method work the same as the built-in HDD partitions? Thanks ahead!

I needed to reinstall on my Asus laptop due to unnecessary software. I had to start in a live Ubuntu version to retrieve the BIOS key (referenced here). I downloaded a Windows 8 ISO from Pirate Bay, provided legally if you have a serial number.

I believe you’re limited to backing up your existing setup, but you’re missing an installation disc. Windows 8 comes with a preinstalled key that should appear automatically. You might try swapping your hard drive or borrowing a Windows 8 DVD from someone else to test. If you decide to purchase a copy yourself, you’ll receive a key for a desktop or another laptop. Microsoft is actively working to stop piracy by not including installation media or transferable keys anymore. I personally use Windows 8.1, though I bought it as a retail product, so please verify. I’m aware that Asus Backtracker only copies the factory image, which you likely use to reinstall bloatware on your drive.
