Updating Windows 10 on a fresh Dell laptop?
Dell representatives seem uninformed, so I sought advice from specialists. I’m planning to buy the new XPS 15 9560 and want to perform a clean install of Windows 10 Pro after setup, to remove unnecessary software. Is Dell providing my Windows 10 Pro license with the product or packaging? Can I install Windows 10 Pro from a Microsoft image and activate it using the provided product key? Thanks!
I intended to buy Windows 10 Pro... I require another copy of what? Because a clean installation isn’t feasible. I believed the laptop would include a license key, allowing me to reinstall Windows 10 Pro and add the key.
Consider getting an upgrade key instead of the full original version. It’s cheaper and compatible with your Home package. Installing it and then re-installing should work fine. A full reinstall would be more complicated than just updating. You won’t need to reinstall entirely to move to Pro—just add 10 Home, remove unnecessary software, and enter the key. Note that Windows 10 Pro isn’t available on Pro machines running Windows 10.
Really foolish of me, but I wasn't surprised—it's Dell after all, lol
Dell offers Windows 10 for $50 more to unlock Pro features. My idea was to buy it with Pro and then reinstall Windows 10 Pro from Microsoft to remove any unnecessary software. Does this approach still make sense, even with a valid Pro activation key? I'm a bit puzzled.
Avoid reinstalling from Microsoft. It adds unnecessary complexity. Just install 10 Pro. Perform a clean software reset via the Windows 10 tool, and you'll eliminate bloat.
