Hey everyone, I'm facing an issue since my X99 system stopped working because the motherboard failed. I'm switching to Treadripper for an upgrade, but I don't have the license key for Windows 10 Pro anymore after moving from Windows 8.1 Pro. I'm worried reinstalling Windows 10 might not recognize my PC. What should I do? Also, I have a free Windows 10 Education version from my university—should I use that instead?

Using the same hard drive means no extra steps are needed. A reactivation might be necessary because of hardware updates, but it will function since the controlling files remain on your drive. You can also use your product key 8.1, which works as a Windows 10 key when you upgraded Microsoft. In short, just install your old boot drive onto the new system and everything should work fine.

You're ready to set up the installation. Your 8.1 key should work for the process. Just make sure your drive is properly connected before starting.

First, install the drive and start Windows so it can install all required drivers. Then, verify everything functions properly. Once confirmed, clone your system to a second, larger SSD using Macrium Reflect or another suitable tool—there are many guides on this forum. This approach works well; test it yourself before seeking help.

Win8.1 keys were available either as OEM or retail. The OEM versions were fixed to the motherboard and wouldn't work on new systems unless you contacted Microsoft support. If it was a retail key or linked to your MS account, you could reinstall Win10 on a new device and use the activation process.
