It alters the IP address, yet you must link to the VPN server. In short, a VPN establishes a secure encrypted connection to the server, so when you access a site it displays the server's IP as yours. That’s why pirates use them—they’re hidden from the MPAA to the server level. But if someone knows your ISP IP, they can still target you.

If they possess your real IP address, there’s nothing you can do except alter it. I rely on VPNs and proxies most of the time, but once your IP is exposed, it becomes a problem.
