Hello everyone,

It's been a while since my last upgrade, but a significant CPU limitation seems to be the reason I'm considering a change. Additionally, my new GPU isn't supporting HDMI audio output, so I'm forced to rely on 3.5mm or optical connections. I'm trying to stay competitive without sacrificing too much performance.

Current specs:
CPU: I5 4670k 3.4Ghz @4.0Ghz
Motherboard: ASRock Extreme 4 z97
RAM: 16GB DDR3 Corsair Vengeance
PC Power Supply: Evga 850W Gold

Upgrade ideas:
CPU: AMD 5700X £159.99 new
Motherboard: MSI MPG B550 GAMING PLUS £109.99
RAM: 16GB DDR4 Corsair vVengeance RGB 3200 £45
Total cost: £315

Same PSU will be kept; hard drives are fine (though one has a noticeable hum). What are your thoughts? I'm aiming for a lower total and might consider a 350 budget, possibly needing a new CPU fan. I'm using a stealth model and no longer have the AMD connections. I've noticed prices have risen sharply, and Intel's boards seem unreliable.

Thanks! 👍🏼

This memory option would suit the 5700X well:

The Thermalright Assassin X V2 offers solid performance.

AM4 generally performs better with G.Skill RAM. You might want to consider fitting a 2x16GB package like this one.

if you intend to use AM4, opt for the 5800X3D. it is the optimal CPU for that platform and will remain effective longer than alternatives without X3D support.
if you think the 5800X3D might be expensive, consider a 13400 B760 combo at a comparable cost:
B760:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/VNkW...071513400f
For memory, aim for 3600mhz options such as these:

When selecting a cooler, here are some recommendations:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/p7hv...ler-hx6250
It’s also wise to upgrade your PSU if it exceeds seven years.

When you ask about working better, I mean how effectively and efficiently you can accomplish tasks.
Cheers btw 👍🏼

I'm trying to keep things affordable, that CPU is £120 more than what I was looking at—it's £271 on Amazon, the 13400 is £191.
I'll go with 3600 g-skill cheers for the RAM.
The Friday tower is only £30, that's a winner.
Cheers👍🏼

the 13400 and B760 combo totals 305
5700X and B550 reach 270.
Consider whether upgrading to new parts or enhancing CPU performance makes sense.
B450 mobo choices:

When comparing different benchmarks for the games I play, I found it hard to choose between 5800x3d and 5700x. Cyberpunk didn’t show any difference, and most other titles were significantly better than 120 frames per second. Since I usually play at 1080p or 2560x1080 (ultrawide), I think the extra performance isn’t necessary but could help in the future if my hardware improves.

From what I can tell, the 13400 and b760 are priced around £350 on Amazon, aiming to stay competitive.
Checking game benchmarks shows the gap between them is minimal, so they perform almost equally.
I plan to use the 5700xt for gaming.
